History: Chris Argent is the oldest of two siblings and comes from a long line of werewolf hunters that originated in France. His father, Gerard Argent, has demonstrated psychopathic tendencies and only adheres to the Hunter’s Code where it suits him to do so. His mother hasn’t been addressed much on the show, but it might be assumed that Chris takes after her given that he only has so much in common with Gerard, who he refers to by his first name.
The Argents have been around the block a few times in terms of places they’ve lived and career parameters they’ve operated within. This most recent generation probably originated in a densely forested region of northern Ontario, where speaking French and running around fighting werewolves with swords might have been slightly more normal than it is in California. I've only been to Toronto so any further north and I have to assume. They’ve been in and out of Beacon Hills for at least the last thirty years, as dictated by history established by show canon. Gerard fucked over just about every pack in the region somewhere around 2003 and Kate burned the Hale house down (along with most of the Hales) around 2006.
VAGUE TIMELINE BULLET POINTS:Chris was probably introduced to hunting and the whole werewolf thing at a much younger age than has been standard for hunters historically. He’s very firm about the code and about keeping Allison in the dark until she’s old enough to handle it. There’s a 12 year age gap between Chris and his younger sister, Kate. As her big brother, he loves her and feels responsible for keeping her safe and out of trouble. Also as her big brother, he is impatient with her bullshit a lot of the time. At some point in his late teens or early 20s, he was forced to shoot a friend and fellow hunter in the head after said friend was bitten on a full moon. He describes the incident for Stiles in detail when Stiles downplays the danger inherent in having werewolves for friends. He married Victoria at a relatively young age -- 21 -- and they had Allison 2 years later. His tying the knot with Victoria might have been arranged by Gerard to ally the Argents with another powerful family of hunters. As far as power couples go they made for a pretty terrifying pair. As a young-ish parent, Chris is a little dumb in how he handles things like keeping werewolf hunting a secret from his daughter forever. And boyfriends. Especially boyfriends who turn out to be werewolves. He has some experience from his dealings with Kate, but Kate tended to be a little less subtle. About everything. In general. At the point where we pick up, Chris has lost his entire immediate family except for Allison in under a year. Kate was killed by Peter after he learned about her murdering the Hale family, he had to help Victoria kill herself after she was bitten and Gerard might as well be dead for all he’s worth while living. Most of the local hunters he ran with are dead as well. He’s a little lost as a result.
The show picks up with Chris and Victoria in their early 40s. Allison is 17 when they move back to Beacon Hills and are caught up in the drama of Peter Hale’s rise as an alpha in search of revenge. Allison becomes involved with a boy (Scott) who turns out to be a werewolf. Chris is one of the major antagonists of the show in the first season and there’s a great deal of dramatic irony involved in his run-ins with Scott, who Kate eventually realizes is a werewolf. In the end, Chris’s firm adherence to the code leads him to save Scott’s life and turn on Kate after Stiles convinces him that Kate murdered the Hale family 6 years prior. Kate is ultimately killed by Peter.
Season 2 starts with Chris hauling Scott out of Allison’s car and shoving a gun in his face. He forbids Allison from seeing him EVAR AGAIN. Gerard comes to town to avenge Kate and more or less takes control of the hunters in Beacon Hills. Chris has Reservations but there are larger problems afoot. Problems like Allison is still totally sleeping with Scott. Also there’s a snake monster killing everyone but you know. Victoria attempts to kill Scott and is bitten by Derek in the ensuing conflict. In accordance with the code, Victoria must then kill herself before she becomes a werewolf. Chris helps. Gerard manipulates Allison into falling into psychotic line with him, which is alarming enough for Chris to side with werewolves once again. In the end, they take care of the snake monster and of Gerard in one fell swoop. Chris retires from Hunting because it is very stressful and he’s lost like his entire family except for Allison in less than a year.
In Season 3, Scott and Allison convince Chris to take up arms again because shit’s all crazy violent in Beacon Hills with a pack of crazy Alpha Werewolves and a psycho druid in town. Chris’s relationship with werewolves is almost amicable at this point, even though he makes it clear that he still has strong feelings about wanting to murder them sometimes. Especially the ones who’ve contributed to the death of all of his family members. After they undergo a series of ordeals, Allison creates a new code for them to follow and Chris agrees that they should protect those who cannot protect themselves.
NOTE: A lot of this history is derived from context clues provided by the show. It’s been established that we’ll learn more about Chris’s background in the second part of S3 so I may need to make some corrections/additions accordingly when those episodes air.
Personality:"We go by the code."
Chris is a methodical, obstinate traditionalist who has trained his entire life to hunt down and destroy werewolves and other dire creatures who prey upon mankind. He is highly protective of his daughter and of his ideals, especially those framed by the Hunter’s Code, to the point that he has turned his back on his own family more than once to protect them.
"Nice ride. Black cars, though. Very hard to keep clean."
His deep-seated confidence is borne of experience and he derives a great deal of pride and personal satisfaction from having the jump on his opposition, whether it be a 16 year old lacrosse player or a pack of vicious werewolves. He’s a decent guy but not an especially nice one: he casually intimidates and misleads and traps people in their own mistakes for sport. He smashes out car windows and discharges deadly weapons in densely populated areas and puts his hands on people when they sass him.
He just tends to be in pursuit of some greater good in doing so.
"You, on your bike. You, inside."
He’s accustomed to being an outsider. Between all the moving around, his awareness of the supernatural and his excess of self-confidence, he tends to be aloof towards the people he lives and works around. As of Season 3, the obliteration of his family and later his early “retirement” have started to change that as he’s pushed out of his comfort zone and into regular contact with people he wouldn't have associated with previously.
"Allison, answering your cell phone will make discussing the terms of your grounding much easier."
He is trying to be a better father. Not that he was a bad one before. Distracted, maybe. Preoccupied with leading a double life and killing things and lying all the time. Over-protective. A little naive. He’s working on it. Occasional bouts of helicopter parenting may be excused by his knowledge of literal monsters running around killing people in Beacon Hills and the fact that Allison is the only love he has left in the world.
"Put the gun down. Before I put you down."
He has a temper but his aggression is typically reigned in by reason before it can escalate to homicide. Where Gerard murders, maims and tortures out of spite, Chris weighs his own judgment against the code and often aims to warn, threaten or capture rather than kill. He believes that hard evidence of wrong-doing is necessary (in most cases) before a werewolf can be executed and has even rendered aid to juvenile wolves being tortured in Gerard’s custody for no reason. Occasionally he sees red -- especially where his daughter is concerned -- but even in a rage he’s susceptible to being talked down. Assuming the speaker is really convincing and doesn't make any sudden movements.
“Didn't anyone ever tell you not to bring claws to a gun fight?”
He is also swift to recognize a situation too dire for negotiation and will shoot to kill without hesitation when innocent lives are at stake. Furthermore, while he has more of a tendency to dig his heels in about justice and morality than most hunters, he has been complicit in some pretty twisted shit, including kidnapping and torturing the school principal with Victoria on Gerard's orders.
There’s probably just a little touch of insanity that goes with the territory of being a werewolf hunter descended from a long line of werewolf hunters I guess. His intentions are generally noble. Relatively speaking.
Powers/Abilities:
Humanity: One of Chris’s greatest assets in Teleios will probably be that he’s a hunter who is all too familiar with the limitations inherent in being a human. Specifically, a human highly skilled in contending with supernatural forces far more powerful than he is, physically, psychically, magically, inexplicably, whatever. He’s been working from within a human handicap straight off the block and harbors no resentment for it. He takes pride in his humanity.
Hunting: This guy was basically bred down through generations of Argents and raised for one purpose: to hunt down and kill supernatural beings with beastly strength and speed and human intellect. He’s a master tracker, trapper and marksman who’s as comfortable with a bow at his shoulder as he is an assault rifle. In addition to utilizing traditional methods like snares, tripwires and traditional arrows, he seems to have made a hobby of innovating new and exciting ways to hobble his quarry by attacking heightened senses and so on.
Weapons: Chris is operating as an arms dealer at the time of the show and is obviously adept with everything from military-grade assault rifles to long bows. His favorite is purportedly the crossbow but he also seems partial to massive .45s, desert eagles and the like. Knives are frequently hidden about his person and it probably took a pretty thorough checking over to relieve him of all of them upon his arrival.
Investigation: Although he has a few blind spots -- especially where his family is concerned -- Chris is acutely observant and often ahead of the game when there’s some shady supernatural shit going on. He puts two and two together well. At least well enough to latch on and bite down when it doesn’t equal four. If he’s not on the right track, he tends to be dangerously close to it.
Teaching: As a hunter with an immense amount of confidence in his own skill, he has proven himself to be an effective (if unorthodox) teacher. Many of the combat skills Allison demonstrates as the show progresses can be attributed to his training. He’s to the point, merciless and maybe slightly melodramatic, going so far as to orchestrate a false kidnapping for Allison to break herself out of after she insists she can hack it as a hunter.
Buttoning his shirt: Haha no just kidding he is terrible at this.
